This week’s ByteStand Success interview features Sash Vitality, a family-run business specializing in the sale of health products and natural supplements.
Tell us about your products and how you got started.
Previously, I was a full time software tester and had a comfortable job. For years though, I was looking to start my own business so I could have more flexibility in my schedule and work for myself. I’d been keeping my eye on the Amazon opportunity for a while but hadn’t found the right niche to enter into.
In 2016 my niece was diagnosed with leukemia and this took me through a journey of looking into alternative natural foods. I came into contact with a whole new world out there! I developed a strong interest in organic and natural food items, which finally lead me towards the products which we are selling now.
The first product we launched was Organic Turmeric. I actually came to this product as I was looking for a natural alternative for some knee pains I was suffering. I saw that turmeric was good for aches and pains and once I started taking it, my pains went away! It was at this point that I became a ‘believer’ and decided to start Sash and help people get access to these amazing products.
What have you found to be the best ways to attract and retain customers?
We have found that creating a top quality product always attracts customers. Our products are of high quality and we always manufacture them in the same country we sell them in. We also go above and beyond and get the relevant certifications, so we can prove our quality.
We like to rise above the status quo, by creating formulations which other brands have not come out with but provide great health benefits to our customers – we are always looking to be innovative and creative, and this shines out through our products.
Keeping customers can be challenging but what we find works is fantastic customer service! We live in an age whereby there are so many people selling products (some good and some bad), but what we have tried to do is keep the customer in focus and really make a difference in their lives. We send excellent emails post purchase informing them how best to take their capsules and we respond promptly to any questions they might have.
What has been your biggest challenge along the way?
The shear volume of competition which is always appearing! Competition is good and not always bad, however, we have seen that poor quality competitors are now manufacturing similar products but are selling them at a much cheaper price. This might look good from a consumer perspective, but more times than not, the quality of the products is extremely poor, meaning that the consumer is not getting a top quality product for their health.
It takes courage and determination to keep on top of the pile and hold your nerve when it comes to pricing, but as we have quality products, we can continue on doing this.
What have been the most helpful books, tools or resources for your business?
Every business owner must be continuously reading! Some of the most helpful books I have read to date are:
In terms of resources, honestly, you can’t go wrong with the google suite which provides email, calendar, and google drive. I’m also a massive user of Fiverr, Upwork and peopleperhour.com. I outsource a lot of work ranging from design work, VA tasks, content creation and these sites are amazing!
And of course FBA Shipping by Bytestand – top application. Has made my life so easy 🙂
What are your plans for the future?
We are a fully e-commerce business, however we are looking to diversify our distribution channels and will be looking to supply physical shops and get our products out onto shelves in key retail shops. We hope that we will see some great success and expansion in 2019 and beyond.
Based on your success, what advice would you give others who are just starting out?
Take each day as it comes and always stay positive. You will have good and bad days, but keep on working hard and keep focused – there are always much more good days than bad :-).
Manage your time well and when working on key activities, ensure that you have limited distractions.
Starting your own business will never be easy, but it will definitely be worth it! Don’t be afraid to take time off and look after yourself, the business is a part of your life, but not life itself!
Lastly, try and connect with similar thinking people and speak to them / seek their advice. When you do see success, then stay humble and seek out opportunities geared towards giving back to others in and around your community.
